the return is a four channel, synchronized projection installation that was installed at the Jepson Centre for the Arts Museum in May 2022.
It makes extensive use of AI image generation to originate many of the shots in the the four sequences, which work in synchronization to develop an interplay between the screens. The narration was translated and read by Kwela Hermanns, and the score is original. Most of the images were developed using Generative Adversarial Networks, particularly VQ Gan, but there are extended sequences using AI style transfer.
the return is a “film” about time, images and media, our place in social space and the role of nature in both framing and affirming our sense of ourselves in the world.
